Health Fund Extras – Have You Checked Yours?
With 2017 very quickly drawing to a close, we wanted to talk about health fund extras and the very real fact that many private health insurance policies reset at the end of each year, including your all-important ‘extras’.
Let’s talk basics of how most extras works
Although each health fund and policy can be very different, if you are paying for extras, it generally means additional healthcare services such as physiotherapy, massage or podiatry to name a few.
Generally speaking, it’s very common for your nominated health fund to have a limit each year on how much you can claim on each particular service. For example, your health fund may limit physiotherapy services to $800 per year. Even if you don’t use that $800 worth of physiotherapy services in that year, it may not roll over to the next year and it will just be $800 again next year. So really, you’ve lost out there if you’re not using the full amount.
How to make the most out of your extras during the silly season
During December, with everything happening from Christmas parties and socialising to Christmas shopping and finishing work and school for the year, the last thing on your mind is how much you have left of your health fund extras.
The best thing you can do is spare yourself 10-15 minutes, get out your paperwork or log-on online and get familiar with your policy. Speak to your insurer either by phone or online and find out where you’re up to with all of your extras and see if you have anything left for the rest of the year. You might even find out that you’re eligible for extras you didn’t even know about! Think of it as a Christmas surprise from you, to you.
I’ve still got extras left, what do I do now?
If you find that you do have some extras, congratulations! If you’ve been struggling with niggling injuries, pain and soreness that’s just not going away, now’s the time to get it checked out. Why not make the most of your health fund extras before they run out and at the same time, feel great for the busiest time of the year!
