The importance of Vitamin D

Vitamin D isn't actually a vitamin as such, it is actually a prohormone that has a chemical structure similar to that of steroid hormones like cortisol. The majority of what we need we are able to manufacture from cholesterol, and we can only obtain about 10% from the sun and food and it’s only with the help of the suns rays that this powerful vitamin can become truly active in our bodies. So why is it important to our health?

Vitamin D is essential for the calcium obtained from food to be absorbed into our bones, improving our bone and dental health. It also plays a number of vital roles in regulating the normal functioning of our immune cells by helping to control infection, reducing inflammation and reducing cancer cell growth.

How much we need each day really depends on age, and darker skinned people require a little more because melanin can reduce their absorption rate.

Vitamin D2 is obtained from plants sources like mushrooms and yeast. Vitamin D3 comes from animal sources such as fatty fish, eggs, liver and cheese. Both forms benefit the body in similar ways, but D3 is slightly more affective at increasing blood levels of D.

AC joint aka Acromio-clavicular joint injury is a shoulder injury usually caused by trauma
i.e direct blow in rugby league, falling onto the point of the shoulder or falling with an outstretched hand.

It’s a very painful injury and it approximately accounts for 10% of acute injuries to the shoulder. If you play a contact based sport it’s likely that you have aggravated or injured this joint.
