Just this week, 24yo AFL Collingwood star Nathan Murphy announced his early retirement due to medical advice as a result of battling persistent concussion syndrome & its symptoms.
Murphy believes during his time playing the sport that he may have suffered up to 10 major concussions, resulting in daily symptoms of headaches, migraines and anxiety, amongst others.
Murphy had been in multiple discussions and receiving advice from the AFL’s Concussion Panel and where a decision was made by both the panel, and Murphy, to hang up his boots for the sake of his health.
If not treated properly, persistent concussion symptoms can continue over a long period of time and can include:
Headaches
Fatigue
Irritability
Anxiety
Memory loss
Vision problems
Brain fog
These symptoms are a result of changes to the brain and autonomic system and can last for months and years post-concussion if not correctly assessed, managed, and treated.
Fortunately, physiotherapy can help. Our Physiotherapists are trained in concussion management. We let your doctor know whether a brain scan is needed, assess and treat any issues resulting from the concussion such as neck pain, dizziness, balance, headaches and eye muscle function.
Our approach is focused on hands-on interventions, personalised exercise prescriptions, and self-management strategies catered to your unique requirements. We employ evidence-based techniques to optimise outcomes, ensuring a thorough and effective concussion baseline testing process.
Our new Concussion Baseline Testing service is best to occur at the start of each season, however, anytime is a step in the right direction towards proactively reducing your risk of concussion during your sporting season.
