With 2024 ending, it is the perfect time to relax, reflect upon your health and fitness journey, and formulate goals for the New Year. The most popular resolutions typically focus on losing weight, eating healthier, and exercising more. At Progressive Physiotherapy, we’re excited to help you stick to your goals so you can become the best version of yourself!
A healthy lifestyle requires a holistic plan that builds habits into your everyday routine. According to the NSW Government (2024), eating nutritious foods, engaging in daily movement, getting 7-9 hours of sleep a night and drinking plenty of water are the pillars of a healthy lifestyle. But why do we only stick to these goals for a few weeks and forget about them?
Generally, a lack of discipline to maintain a consistent lifestyle leads us back to the comfort of our old habits. However, it’s essential to recognise that you don’t need to beat yourself up over having too much sugar or missing a week of workouts. Instead, consider the big picture and find new ways to progress towards your goals.
Here are our top tips for creating healthy habits:
- Determine what you want to achieve: Intentionally writing down your goals can help you clarify exactly what you want to achieve and reinforce its importance. Remember to be realistic. We recommend following the SMART method: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-Bound. For example, ‘I will run 3 kilometres in 20 minutes by May by running twice a week and slowly increasing my distance’.
- Start small: Fitness and health goals can be daunting. We recommend starting with small actions and building up so your body gets used to the changes.
- Be consistent: Building a routine is the key to mastering consistency. Implementing your new habits with existing ones makes them easy to remember. Tracking your progress with an app or journal allows you to monitor your efforts and identify areas for improvement.
- Be patient: Sometimes, you cannot always lead a perfectly healthy life. Enjoy the indulgent food on your holiday and take a break from exercise when you’re sick. These situations may disrupt your progress, but you can always get back on track.
